#01: The first edition of PMM Office Hours ✨
Welcome to the first edition of the PMM Office Hours newsletter! Thank you for inviting me into your inbox - I’m truly flattered.
If we haven’t met before, I’m Tamara 👋🏻 By day, I lead product marketing and lifecycle at Kajabi. By night, I’m working to shape the future of product marketing.
I’m on a mission to help product marketers build high impact careers, and you’re invited.
I fundamentally believe that product marketing is the linchpin to sustainable business growth. But this can only be true when it’s a strategic function, not an execution-only one.
The reality is that many PMMs struggle to create the space to think strategically. We’re often stuck in the weeds of tactical activities like writing collateral, negotiating release notices with PMs, or planning launch campaigns.
When PMMs do have the space to work on higher impact strategies, it can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? How do you connect big picture thinking to your daily tasks?
Over my 10-year career as a PMM leader, I’ve not only championed the role of strategic product marketing within software companies, but I’ve also compiled a toolkit to help accelerate and amplify my success.
Every Sunday, I'll share one actionable insight to help you take product marketing strategy and apply it practically in your day-to-day role. Here's what you can expect:
1) Tips to help you distill PMM strategy into action
Almost every PMM I talk to shares the same challenge: “I know what I should be working on as a PMM, but I don’t always know the best way to connect the what with the how”.
If you feel the same way, you’re not alone. Whether you’re at the beginning of your PMM career, or a seasoned leader, connecting strategy to action isn’t always easy. I’ve struggled with this same challenge myself during my own career as both a VP of Product Marketing and a Chief Strategy Officer.
Each week, I’ll help you demystify the “how” of product marketing across a range of strategic activities, from audience segmentation and pricing and packaging to category design and positioning and messaging.
2) The frameworks, resources and tools I use myself to build effective go-to-market
Google “product launch templates” and you’ll find a variety of downloadable content. Unfortunately, most of these PMM templates are created by organizations looking to drive low cost lead generation, and not by practicing product marketers.
I’ve spent over a decade building my own toolkit of battle-tested techniques. Each week, I’ll aim to include the highlights of these frameworks, resources and templates, along with tips on how to make them your own.
You can expect goodies like how to run an effective Van Westendorp price sensitivity survey and my method to message test positioning prior to launch.
3) The advice I bookmark from other product, growth and PMM leaders
I’m a pretty friendly gal - you’ll often find me speaking at conferences, chatting on the phone with my mentors, and connecting with others I admire online. I have an insatiable curiosity, and I’m always learning. I want to share these learnings with you!
From time to time, I'll ask my PMM friends to guest write and share their own battle-tested resources and frameworks. In addition to that, I'll also link out to what I'm currently learning, reading and bookmarking - after all, sharing is caring.
Are you ready for 2023?
Setting the right goals is the first step to elevating your role as a PMM. As they say, measure what matters. And if you’re measuring the wrong thing, you’ll be stuck in the weeds forever.
Next Sunday, I’ll share my advice on drafting product marketing OKRs that’ll set you up for a successful 2023.
